Come on, Ofcom!

Why branding the very existence of minorities as “political” has only just begun

Ofcom won’t work with Stonewall? Of course not. Or Trans Media Watch? Under this government? If you thought exclusion of “woke” charities from round the policy table was just an LGBT thing, think again. Because conservative ideologues are coming for all of you!

Now read on.

Surprised by the Ofcom decision to stop working with Stonewall? Don’t be. Because over at Trans Media Watch, we saw the writing on the wall at least a year ago.

Ofcom? Off-gone!

Back then, we were asked to pop in to Ofcom to deliver a little light training. Nowt controversial there. We are a charity, whose dual objectives are to promote respectful and accurate reporting of trans issues in the media. That’s…not exactly rocket science.

Respect? Don’t misgender. Don’t deadname. Don’t sensationalise. Mostly, it is just good journalistic practice. Much the same way as we don’t expect journalists to refer to women who choose still to use a maiden name by their married one. And yes, in Japan it is a very live, feminist issue.

Accuracy? Come on! Of course, the British press aspire to accuracy. After all… who’s that sniggering at the back? That’s not a joke…
