Image of a young man with a spear and cape speaking with the Sphinx. The Sphinx asks: “Are you planning to kill your dad?” and “How about sleeping with you mum?” Oedipus protests: “Look! You’re meant to answer MY questions!” To this the Sphinx replies: “Yes. But this is just too delicious!”. Meanwhile voices off observe: “I hear Oedipus is #mansplaining again!”

IPSO wants to know if folks are happy with its new guidance on the reporting of sex and gender identity. I know…

So tiring!

But, if you happen to have five minutes spare over the next couple of weeks, maybe tell them (politely) what you think.

Now read on.

Your mission (should you accept it…)

Let’s start with what is being asked — and what is not. IPSO has already published “guidance”. It is, in theory, a done deal. All the big consultation stuff has happened. So, what you are being asked is how well they have done the thing.

It’s a bit like a certain King Herod issuing “guidance” on the slaughtering of the firstborn. Not a question of whether he should. Just whether it is better done this way or that. With a sword or a pillow?

So, not: yes, but can we change it totally and insert what we’d like instead? That’s not going to happen. Or shouldn’t. Be on the lookout for major last-minute changes.

All the same, it never hurts to try. The antis will be out there in force trying their hardest. And you never know: they might just listen…
