I don’t like doing this. Poring over the most intimate details of a stranger’s gender for no better reason than that a bunch of bigots are whipping up a frenzy of hate about that person. It is wrong. It is demeaning to all involved. Sadly, it is the very fact of that disgusting frenzy, made up in equal measure of horrid innuendo and outright lie, that makes pieces such as this necessary.

Background

Most of you will know most of this already. Useful, though, to kick off with a summary of the situation vis-à-vis Olympic boxer, Imane Khelif. What follows is what i have gleaned from multiple sites. If you have any skill with google, you should be able to track down and source each and every statement below. Tread careful, though, as this will also bring you face-to-face with some of the most hateful elements of social media.

‘Girly boxing’

As best we know, Khelif was born in Algeria. She was assigned female at birth and, until lately no-one was questioning that; nor that she is and identifies as a cis woman.
