Until more information is in, we have no way of knowing whether this will eventually be categorised as hate crime or not.

However, that was not my primary concern. Rather, i do not want to see the trans community getting all worked up about demanding this be treated as such, because

a) even if it turns out to be one by any reasonable standard, that doesn't mean the judge will agree it is, and

b) measuring anti-trans hate solely in terms of what the legal establishment declares it to be feels like a pretty bad idea.

In other words, let us condemn this crime for the horror that it was...and not provide rhetorical gifts to those that hate us, along the way.
